We thank those users who helped us out during the private beta test of OggSync. We have decided to move the beta to a full public beta. Before installing please backup your data and also uninstall previous versions of OggSync that you are running.
We’ve made a quick presentation that outlines some of the new features in OggSync Mobile 4.0, that is available here.
As mentioned before, the major new feature for OggSync 4.0 is contact sync. OggSync supports all of the Google Contact fields and will sync as many fields as it can to the mobile or office environment. OggSync preserves all data on both Google and Outlook sides. This means that if you have 20 email addresses for a contact in Google, OggSync will sync as many as it can to Outlook or the Device, but preserve the extra information in Google when data is synced back from Outlook.
We also are pleased to announce a major change in the way we support Microsoft Outlook. OggSync now runs as a system tray application in version 4.0 with a start at windows bootup and autosync feature so that you are always in sync.
As always, OggSync supports Multiple Google calendars to multiple Outlook calendars (with either a combined view in a single Outlook calendar or spread or repeated to as many Outlook calendars as you wish). 4.0 also supports contact sync in the Desktop.
We know that contact sync has been the major feature request and OggSync is proud to be the first product with real Google Contact sync. Just like with Multiple Google calendar sync, we very much want to be the innovator for features you want as fast as we can deliver them.
If you have any issues with the beta, please make all report to support@oggsync.com.
Thank you!

Comment by Ben Humphry — March 27, 2008 @ 2:52 amSelling the “BETA” version, with “…a few open issues”??? Wow.
[From OggSync: We are selling the stable version. There is a beta group for non-subscribers mentioned below.]

Comment by Morghus — March 27, 2008 @ 11:44 amThanks !!! This thing is working pretty well on my Samsung i780 !
Comment by zlebandit — March 27, 2008 @ 5:37 pmI was part of the private beta group and improvements are really great.
Contacts sync well, options for syncing are really intelligent (only sync contacts with names for example) and really helpfull for users.
I’ve been using oggsync for a long time now, I’m a happy user of the Pro version, and my wife too !
Keep on this good work.
Regards
installed it, but it did not work on my XV 6800 . went to logon, and it stated Google Timeout.
so no luck! o well maybe when the full version releases
[OggSync: We think this is related to the Google outage.]
Comment by wdts tech vzw — March 27, 2008 @ 7:39 pminstalled it, but it did not work on my dopod D600, wm5.0. went to logon, and it stated Google Timeout.

[OggSync: We think this is related to the Google outage.]
Comment by ddddtttt — March 28, 2008 @ 9:12 amWorks well on my vx6800. Contact sync always says that I have 6 new in Outlook. Doesn’t seem to change the totals. Hmmmm.
[OggSync: These represent contacts that Google is reporting as conflicts. We are working on options to merge these.]
Comment by Jon — April 2, 2008 @ 1:42 amHi guys
Great product, had been using a free alternative but this appears more fully featured. Purchased a licence and using the new beta now.
Had a few initial issues with duplicating all my google contacts but got it sorted in the end!!
One little feature that would be fantastic, can you perhaps add a feature to allow birthdays to be synced also, perhaps as a custom field on google like “Bday 28-03-1981″ or such? Would be a perfect solution once that is done, means i can use google as my primary contact backup store for OTA data recovery in case of phone meltdown
Comment by Colin — April 3, 2008 @ 10:41 amInstalled the 4.07 beta yesterday. Then exported all my Google contacts, and then deleted them from Google. After that, I synced my AT&T Tilt, and everything went perfectly. I didn’t want to deal with conflicts for the first sync, so that’s why I backed up and deleted first. Besides my phone is more up to date than my Google contacts anyway.
Thanks for the new features guys. Lovin’ it.
Comment by Jason — April 7, 2008 @ 4:50 pmI have pro version and it works perfectly while i use Wifi connection.
But if i use it through WAP (Vodaphone France SFR) i have a “google timeout” error !
I have CF .NET 3.5 to run Oggsync.
And same problem with the non Beta version.
can Oggsync actually work without a DATA Plan and only a WAP GPRS connection ?
[OggSync: The issue is https. Google requires this to connect which is good for security, however WAP networks don’t always allow it. I suspect this is your issue.]
Comment by guigui42 — April 10, 2008 @ 9:08 amStill loving this software!!! Whenever I sync my calendar on my mobile phone, all my appts. show up as free. This never happened on ver. 3.21. Am I missing something?
[OggSync: Yes we did remove the reminders for all day events in 3.07. We will add those back in the next release.]
Comment by Rich — April 15, 2008 @ 2:55 pmIt caused my Mogul to reset and stop booting at the Windows Mobile screen. Had to do a hard reset. Not a happy camper. This after I paid for the Pro version
[OggSync: Responded to your email. Did you check the free memory on your phone? Did you try taking the battery out and rebooting before the hard reset? How much free memory did you have? We’ve had one other user say that rebooting was a problem. They were able to reboot after removing the battery although OggSync doesn’t auto-start at boot time unless you put a link in the startup folder, and I understand you were still using the free version for this, right? Our only guess is that it might be related to a large calendar and/or contact database after the sync?]
Comment by David Hogan — April 21, 2008 @ 7:11 pmWhen is 4.0 for WM coming out of beta? Please provide an ETA.
Comment by Pete — April 23, 2008 @ 6:50 pmThe Google calendar sync’ing works great. I’ve used it for several months.
The Google contacts sync’ing has the potential to provide a huge improvement to my workflow. This along with Zindus for Thunderbird will let me have common contacts on my PDA/cell phone with Outlook Mobile, on the GMail website, in Thunderbird, and in Outlook (which I like only because it has nicer options for printing my contacts.)
However, I have a few issues with OggSync’s contact syncing. I should have done what Jason did and first backed up my contacts and then delete them everywhere, but I wanted to automatically get the union of all contacts from all my sources. So after the first OggSync run, I ended up with tons of duplicates: “John Doe” and “Doe, John” didn’t seem match & merge with each other. I would have been nice if these were detected and merged, but that’s ok, I just went in and manually deleted the ones I didn’t want on GMail.
But the next time I sync’ed with OggSync from my PDA, OggSync added back all the contacts that I had deleted! I noticed that happening and pressed the “Stop” button and the text changed to “Stopping…” but it never stopped syncing, and continued to add back all my contacts.
Secondly, I couldn’t get the Outlook version to work at all. I kept getting errors saying “Contract retrieval google timeout (Pro)” every time I tried to sync. Any pointers?
Thanks, I’m really looking forward to using this!
[OggSync: Thanks for the report, this should be fixed in 4.19+, however we have had reports of changes not syncing with contacts in the lates version.]
Comment by Conrad — April 23, 2008 @ 10:41 pmHi!
I am a user of OggSync 4.0. My question: Is it planned to sync Outlook “Tasks” and “Notes”. This feature would be very helpfull for me.
Thank, Peter from Germany
[OggSync: That will not be a feature in 4.0, and those aren’t fully supported by Google in a well defined way yet.]
Comment by Peter Haberaecker — April 25, 2008 @ 1:50 amJust wondering if there are any plans to have the contacts sync also include contact photos. Love the software, thanks!
[OggSync: 4.19+ includes contact photo sync.]
Comment by Kyle — June 3, 2008 @ 11:51 pmI was also wondering if/when the additional features for contacts will be added to the Outlook sync as well as to the mobile sync…pictures, notes, tasks, etc. Looking forward to being able to keep my contacts sync’d between outlook, outlook mobile and google.
Thanks,
Bryan
PS - LOVE this application…so nice being able to maintain some kind of balance between desktop, internet and mobile phone for appointments, etc.
[OggSync: Outlook contacts are synced in version 4.0 (the system tray version). Version 3.0 doesn’t sync contacts (the toolbar version).]
Comment by Bryan — June 24, 2008 @ 1:48 amWill this software eventually sync the contacts automatically along with the calendar rather than manually having to sync the contacts each time?
[OggSync: Yes, we currently don’t autosync contacts as they are very data intensive at the moment.]
Comment by Rich — June 25, 2008 @ 3:40 pmGreat software. I’m very happy with calendar sync, particularly with the fact that it can sync many calendars (pro version), and that it does so relatively quickly.
The contact sync is working, though it is a bit slow. However, the main problem I have is that OggSync fails to parse correctly names that don’t fit the standard US naming patter of “FirstName (MiddleNames) LastName”, with parentheses denoting an optional name part. Many countries don’t follow this pattern, and as a result names are parsed incorrectly, with important consequences down the line.
For example, in Spain we use the pattern “FirstName (MiddleNames) LastName1 LastName2″. Currently, OggSync will parse this pattern incorrectly, considering the lastname to be LastName2, ignoring the more important LastName1. The result is that contacts are created with the incorrect last name, and it becomes impossible to search for contacts by last name.
I sympathize with the challenges you face when trying to reconcile Google’s single name field with Outlook’s multiple fields (title, firstname, middlename, lastname, suffix). It is almost impossible to come up with a solutions that fits all languages and cultures. However, I believe that you could improve on the current solution with either of the following options:
* Simplest: Expand the list of “File As” options to include “Entire name in first name” and “Entire name in last name”. This would copy Google’s single name field to Outlook’s first name (or last name), leaving all other Outlook’s name fields blank. It is a crude solution, but one that would result in correct and consistent naming of contacts in the mobile device, which is more than can be said about the current solution.
* Simple: Expand the list of “File As” options to include simple custom parsing pattern. For example “parse middle names as last names” or “in names with three or more parts, parse the last two as the last name”. These are simple some quick thoughts, but they would get the job done.
* Complicated: Allow custom parsing patterns. These can be homegrown (e.g. “fn mn* ln ln” might stand for “first name part is the firstname, last two parts are the lastname, everything else is the middlename). Alternative, the patterns can be simplified regex expression with capturing groups corresponding to the first, middle and last names.
Just thoughts, but hopefully they will be useful.
Keep up the great work. I cannot wait to see the final release version.
Demian Martinez
[OggSync: Thanks Demian, and also for your emails.]
Comment by Demian — June 26, 2008 @ 11:19 amGreat product. I’ve been fighting to get my Windows Mobile 6 device and Vista to sync for weeks now and still have no solution in sight. Your app has just solved all my calendar issues in one easy hit. Can you please give Microsoft some lessons on how to make these things actually work.
Comment by Jim — July 4, 2008 @ 4:28 pmThanks, keep up the good work.
Got this running over the weekend. It’s amazing! I’ve been waiting forever for Gmail contact sync to come along and you guys nailed it. The only problem I ran into was it decided to duplicate all my appointments on my first sync after uninstalling the old version and installing the new. Took a little while to clean up, but I got it taken care of. Keep up the great work. I can’t wait for the final release with (hopefully) auto sync on Contacts.
[OggSync: 4.19 is getting very close with contacts. We are working on a “reset” feature that will hopefully address your issue. If you had synced by some other method prior, OggSync will likely not identify the appointments as matches and will “duplicate” them as it syncs the non-matched appointments in both directions (makes a copy of the outlook appointment on Google and vice versa.)]
Comment by Mathew Schaffer — July 7, 2008 @ 3:57 pmSeems like you could just have it sync using the internet connection on the mobile device.
[OggSync: You can use any internet connection to sync. Wifi, G3, EVDO, etc. but you do need to be able to see the internet. There are reports of some limited wap type plans not working. If they don’t support SSL and you cannot surf to https://oggsync.com, you may have problems over that connection.]
Comment by Maj — July 8, 2008 @ 9:05 amThere is a bug in version 1.19 mobile if you are getting 0/0 when trying to sync from Google, make a minor change in one of the Google calendar entries and the calendar should sync.
Comment by OggSync — July 8, 2008 @ 8:09 pmI’m running into the same issue with oggsync duplicating events on my google calendar…Is there anyway to fix this?
[OggSync: If you are getting duplicates with every sync, that is a bug and that shouldn’t be happening, please contact support@oggsync.com. If you got duplicates with your first sync, you can back out the sync by unchecking your calendars and syncing again. Then you can clean one side or the other of appointments and sync again. Best to start with one clean side until the “reset” feature is out.]
Comment by Jonathan Sparks — July 8, 2008 @ 11:03 pm[OggSync: June 9th bug fix release of 4.19 Mobile is the active beta download. This fixes a bug keeping calendars from syncing initially, as well as a fix for some internal contact picture handling.]
Comment by OggSync — July 9, 2008 @ 7:21 pmGmail just added a feature (though it’s only appearing for some at the moment) called “Suggested Contacts”. Along with this feature is the ability to prevent Gmail from automatically adding everyone you email to your “My Contacts.” They will reside under “Suggested Contacts.” It seems that if OggSync can distunguish between “My Contacts” and “Suggested Contacts”, the “Only Sync Contacts with Names” and “Only Sync Contacts with Numbers” options are not needed…
Comment by Mathew Schaffer — July 15, 2008 @ 3:24 pmas far as i know oggsync uses the GDATA api to sync with google.
Comment by Jens Schumacher — July 21, 2008 @ 2:25 pmthe gdata api dosent have support for the new Suggested Contacts feature yet… but it will soon.
One key Outlook field that doesn’t seem to be supported is category (multiple categories per contact record allowed in Outlook). Google also seems to support multiple “groups” per contact. But OggSync doesn’t? Please clarify. Thanks!
Comment by Grady — July 31, 2008 @ 9:40 pmI use Outlook for my business and personal contacts. Categories in Outlook are a must for me. I know Google supports Groups. Are there any plans to map the Categories in Contacts with Groups on Google?
Comment by Sumeet Vij — August 1, 2008 @ 2:20 pmI have been using OggSync 4.20 with Windows XP/Outlook 2007 for a few weeks now. It works as advertised and I’m not having any real trouble. One suggestion, I would like to have some indicator, maybe a blinking thing in the system try, that would show what OggSync is doing, if anything. For example, is it communicating with Google, or modifying Outlook files, or something else?
Once in a while I noticed my CPU usage jumping up to 100% and staying there for a long time. The Windows task manager shows that OggSync and Outlook are the CPU hogs when that happens. Each of those applications jumps around 40-50% CPU use. It stops after 3-5 minutes and everything seems normal after that.
I almost rebooted my computer the first time this happened. But then I realized that OggSync my be writing to my Outlook files. Which brings up a question. Would I trash my Outlook data if the computer is shut down while OggSync is working?
