We have had a lot of users trying out the OggSync for Outlook who think that the software isn’t working when in fact it’s related to how the “trial” version limits functionality.
The current trial version of OggSync for Outlook only syncs 3 days from today. However, if the event is a recurring event, and the occurances fall within the 3 days, we add the recurring event (which looks like it is outside of the 3 days sync range, further adding to the confusion).
So, we are considering abandoning the 3 day sync range and moving to a straight time trial with no limitations in the time trial, and once the trial is over, OggSync will be disabled.
We are interested in your feedback, please comment on what you think on this post.

Hi,
I am very interested in your software; however, it does not function
correctly.
Today is Mat, 23rd and have programmed an appointement (in Outlook)
for Friday, 25th. Executing synchronisatipn to Google (while it is two
way ub OggySync), nothing happens in Google.
Please help me.

Hi Metrab, try removing any Categories that you may have defined on your event.

Comment by OggSync — May 23, 2007 @ 7:40 amIf you limit the functionality of a program, then a free trial is worthless because the only way to see if the program can work for you is to buy it, which defeats the purpose of a “Trial Period”, I was about to try this software until I realized that it has limitations during the trial period. Send me an email when the trial terms have changed.
Comment by Joao Machado — May 24, 2007 @ 10:03 amNoted. Thanks for the feedback Joao.
Comment by OggSync — May 24, 2007 @ 10:28 amIf you give us the version 3 of Oggsunc for mobile, you won’t nedd anymore trial versions. People will definitly buy it !
Comment by zlebandit — May 24, 2007 @ 3:07 pmWith the changing that google made with calendar (particular reminder for each calendar), the 2.20 doesn’t sync anymore the reminders…. Come on, I’m sure we all need it !
I already have the Pro version but I think the 3-day window would be a sufficient trial. In fact, that may even be good enough for some users. The problem I have with time-limited trials is that I don’t always get a chance to play with it as much as I like before expires (over weekend, get busy at work, whatever).
Comment by Equis — May 24, 2007 @ 4:14 pmEquis, thanks for the input. It seems that we have to make an investment explaining why things aren’t syncing, and right now that is time taken away from doing more constructive things (like adding features). But perhaps the problem is that it’s not clear from the GUI that there is only a 3 day sync range.
Comment by OggSync — May 24, 2007 @ 6:00 pmI’m with Equis — a trial of only 7 days isn’t enough time. If the window is that short then I feel that I need to delay my testing until a week when I know I’ll have enough time to play with it. How about 30 days?
Comment by dan — May 24, 2007 @ 7:34 pmOff-Topic: any plans to add Contacts synchronization soon?
Comment by dan — May 24, 2007 @ 7:39 pmAs soon as Google opens their API to contacts, we’ll add it.
Comment by OggSync — May 24, 2007 @ 7:52 pmHi there
Just to answer you question (on topic!) I would like to say YES, I think the 3 day sync period in the trial version is extremely limiting and makes it practically useless. I think you should extend it to at least 7 days, or even better make it unlimited but time-limit the trial version.

Comment by Carl — May 25, 2007 @ 3:52 amWhy not make the trial version the “full product”, but only work for a fixed number of Syncs?… say 20?
Cheers,

Why don’t you offer the service completely free and subsidize the ~$30/year using advertising like everything else on the web. Think about it… With every Sync, you can add a calendar event for me to order a Pizza Hut Pizza. Or maybe to mark the release date of Spider-Man 3 on my calendar, or add an event denoting the weekend play at the center for performing arts, etc.
Wouldn’t that make everybody happy… You guys would definitely have more users… And the concept of time/calendar based advertising would be huge… Would definitely get you a lot of PR… My guess is that it’s only a matter of time until Outlook has native support for iCal or for someone else to come up with a similar service free. What do you think is more appealing, lots of users and a huge market advantage in the long-run or a couple of bucks (ok, maybe more than a couple) in the short term?
Cheers.

There is NO WAY I, or anyone else I know, would EVER use a product that put advertisements in my schedule.
Comment by Mark — May 30, 2007 @ 7:11 pmI think a fully functional trial period is a requirement. I’ve been working to get this tool working right for a couple of weeks, and certain actions can temporarily invalidate the license (until you reset it), so having a full functional trial would resolve those delays/inconveniences. It is how everyone else does it.
Comment by Rick Flashman — May 31, 2007 @ 2:04 pmStick with the three days. it’s a lot more useful. A version that didn’t get disabled after every reboot would be helpful also.
Thanks.
Comment by Eric — June 8, 2007 @ 1:15 pmEric, you must install with setup.exe to apply the Microsoft patch that fixes the disable bug (in MS Outlook). The free version doesn’t help us stay in business, but it does get us eyeballs and I suppose that is valuable (although it increases our support costs/burden). Thanks for the feedback.
Comment by OggSync — June 8, 2007 @ 1:25 pmI vote for sticking with 3 day.
That way folks will use it and like it and then decide they need more days. I hate software that has a time limit - it feels like your forcing me to buy instead of delivering a free version (with some use) and a pro version (with lots more use).
3 days may work for some folks. They’ll use it and tell their friends who then may go ahead and buy the full version.
Comment by William — June 13, 2007 @ 4:51 pm3 days limit is TERRIBLE. I can’t tell if this is going to work for me or not with that limitation. A 30-day trail would make MUCH more sense.
Comment by Earnie — August 27, 2007 @ 2:16 pmI have to agree that the 3 day limit is a problem for me. I would really like to have a sense for the full capabilities of the product before buying it. Sync software is different than other kinds of software, and I am hesitant to try software where some unforeseen limitation can mess up my calendar system on other computers. Even a 7 or 15 day trial fully-functional trial period would be better than the current setup.
