FAQ for Outlook

Filed under: OggSync Overview — OggSync @ 3:25 pm

Q) I’ve installed OggSync for Outlook, but I don’t see it anywhere?

A) You must click on the “Calendar” view to see the OggSync Toolbar. (It says “Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks” on the left hand side, click the “Calendar” part.)

Q) I’m getting: Error: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {620D55B0-F2FB-464E-A278-B4308DB1DB2B} failed due to the following error: 80040154.

A) It looks like one of the DLL’s didn’t get registered for some reason. Please give this a try:

regsvr32 C:\program files\icoa inc\OggSync Desktop v4\Redemption.dll

Q) I’ve installed OggSync, clicked Calendar, but the toolbar doesn’t appear?

A) Make sure your OggSync registry settings are set correctly:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/Outlook/Addins/OggSyncOutlook2003(default)

CommandLineSafe 1
Description OggSyncOutlook — ICOA Inc’s OggSync for Outlook
FriendlyName OggSyncOutlook
LoadBehavior 3
Manifest C:\Program Files\ICOA Inc.\OggSync for Outlook v3\OggSyncOutlook.dll.manifest

If not, you can load them with this file: oggsync.reg

If that doesn’t work, some of the items required may not have installed correcty, or perhaps you have an older version of VTSO installed, reinstall this link:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=49612

Then try to re-enable OggSync

in Outlook 2003 :Tools -> Options -> Other -> Advanced Options -> COM Add-ins.

in Outlook 2007: Tools -> Trust Center -> Add-In Manager.

Also, you can check the following registry setting to see if OggSync has been disabled (delete all the entries under Resiliency):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Resiliency

If none of the above works, contact support@oggsync.com.

Q) I’m using Outlook 2003 and Vista, but the Toolbar doesn’t appear?

A) Install this Microsoft patch: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937652/en-us

Q) I’ve already synced with another program, is there anything I should do before syncing with OggSync?

A) Yes, you should completely uninstall the other program. Then you should clear one side or the other of events. For example, if you have synced events from your Device or Outlook to Google, you should clear out the Google calendars BEFORE trying to sync with OggSync. OggSync attempts to identify items synced by other programs, but other programs may do syncs differently and OggSync may think they are new events, and you will get duplicates.

Q) I want to change my sync settings, but the options are grayed out.

A) In order to change your sync settings you must first “unsync” the calendar. Uncheck the calendar where you want to change the settings and do a manual sync. Once the manual sync is completed, you can change the settings and recheck the calendar. Now the next time you sync, the new settings will be applied to the synced events.

Q) I sync, but it doesn’t move any events to Google.

A) For appointments to sync, they must meet the following criteria:

  • The must reside in the sync range (trial version is +/- 3 days)
  • You must not have a category defined, or if you do and it doesn’t exactly match one of the Google calendars, you must have the “unknown category to default calendar” checkbox checked.
  • The calendar/category for that event must be checked.

Q) I’m using Outlook 2007 and I’ve checked the “Apply Google Colors” checkbox, why don’t my events use the Google Colors?

A) That feature is for Outlook 2003 only. For Outlook 2007, use the Category settings to set colors for the events synced from Google.

Do the following:

1) Open an appointment that belongs to one of the calendars
2) Click the “Categorize” button across the top
3) highlight the Calendar name in the list of Categories
4) Assign color to that category

At this point all of the items in that calendar will be colored.

Here is a quick guide on how the colors in 2003 get applied:

Q) I’ve downloaded but there is a lot of directories and such, how do I install it?

A) The exe should unzip unto a directory called OggSyncOutlookv3, run the setup.exe program inside of that to install all the required items for OggSync for Outlook.

Q) I see a new version on the web page, or I received a notice of a new version available and I want to upgrade, how do I upgrade?

A) Remove OggSync from the “Add or Remove Programs” section in the “Control Panel” in windows. Then install as if installing fresh. OggSync will remember the settings so you can pick up where you left off.

Q) I want to completely reset OggSync, I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled, but my settings are still there.

A) We do not recommend deleting OggSync’s settings. The are designed to stay around during upgrades. OggSync upgrades will migrate data to the next version, so you should never need to totally reset your sync settings.
However, if you insist, we recommend that you back up your calendars in Outlook and in Google, and also clear out the events in either Outlook or Google (although OggSync will make it’s best effort to match up duplicate entries).

OggSync’s settings are stored here in XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft Corporation\Microsoft Office Outlook\ICOA

For Vista look here:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft Corporation\Microsoft Office Outlook\ICOA

Organize (it’s in the menu bar) ~ Folder and Search Options ~ View Tab ~ Advanced Settings ~ Hidden files and folders and make it look as below:

Again, you should really be careful in deleting these settings, and you should back up your calendars.

Q) Can I use ActiveSync, OggSync Mobile and OggSync for Outlook all at the same time?

A) Yes, but you should disable the Calendar sync part of ActiveSync. If you don’t you have created a “Sync Loop” from Google to Outlook to Phone to Google. OggSync can detect this loop and does attempt to recover from it, but that is a failsafe mechanism, and you should disable the Calendar Sync in Activesync to keep things straight.

Q) I have a recurrence pattern, but some of my moved events aren’t showing up.

A) In order for OggSync to sync your exceptions, the exceptions must lie within the sync range.

Q) I keep getting login failed when attempting to log in.

A) It is either your proxy settings or your account has been locked. You can unlock your account with this google page:

https://www.google.com/accounts/UnlockCaptcha

Q) I get duplicates when I get invites (as Google automatically adds them to my calendar), how do I keep from getting duplicates?

A) Go to the Google Settings and look for the setting to “Automatically add invitations to my calendar:” Turn this off. If that still doesn’t work, turn it on. Hit save, then turn it off and hit save again.

Q) No matter what I do, I keep getting 0 New and 0/0 Updated messages.

A) Check to make sure your calendars are selected. Make sure you have events with matching categories.

If you have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise “ScriptScan” which scans Javascript and VBscript scripts that are executed by the Windows Scripting Host. WSH is used by Internet Explorer and Outlook. If an unwanted script is detected it is not allowed to execute.” Add Outlook.exe to the allowed programs list (or disable ScriptScan).

  1. Did you install with setup.exe? If not, then uninstall in the Add/Remove programs and then reinstall with setup.exe.

If so, then for the popups to display, you need to set

    VSTO_SUPPRESSDISPLAYALERTS 0

in your environment variables and restart your computer to make sure they are set in your Outlook context.

Then try to enable it again.

  3. Sorry the FAQ was running together there, I reformatted it so it should be clearer. It’s at: (Right click My Computer in the start menu, choose properties, click the advanced tab, click Environment Variables.)

  6. Hi,
    1) I just bought professional, your product is very interesting for me, thank you.
Regarding outlook - exchange I understood the synchronization would still active when exchange-clients are down; however I need to install the software on one client because the settings needs to setup in outlook which is not running on the server.
Could you please inform me what you were meaning with “outlook - exchange”?
    2) The sync is not going quick, after a full sync it is better to sync only a short period? The calandar item from Google are have to be connected item after item to determine if a change has been made?

  7. Hi Frank,

    1) Outlook must be running for it to sync (it is an Outlook Add-in). We could add a standalone, however, yours is the first request for this.
    2) Yes limiting your sync range will go faster. It does get slower the more items you need to sync. However, it should be much quicker the next time you sync since oggsync only works on modified/changed items.

  8. How do I register the product? Why is it asking me for paypal information when all I want is the freeware version?

Most of the people I work with are total Luddites and I doubt if I’ll ever be able to get them to check an online calendar for my availability. So I really don’t think that I can make use of the Pro version, but I can’t get it to register. Therefore, I can’t get it to map categories to default and it won’t synch ANY appointments!

  9. What is the minimum Outlook version OggSync (Pro) will work with as my company is still living in the stone ages and we are still using outlook 2000… Don’t ask me to upgrade as this is just not going to happen.

    Comment by Bob — June 25, 2007 @ 4:21 pm
  10. In theory it should work with Outlook 2000. If you try it, let us know your results.

  11. I installed OggSync and configured it and then did a calendar sync, and then repeated the sync calendar operation For this month. my daughter, my brother-in-law and a friend’s birthday have disappeared from Outlook calendar, also about half a dozen additional appointments have disappeared from Outlook. Luckily they are all now(I hope) in my Google calendar. I am using the free edition is there anyway I can get my appointments back into Outlook?

    thank you,

    Charles M.

  12. I’m trying to detemine if your product can do the follwing:

I want to have my Outlook “Work” Calendar Sync on my mobile device.
I want to have my Goggle Calendar on my mobile device as well (side-by-side with the “Work” Cal)
I don’t want my Google Calendar uploading to my Work Calendar in Outlook.

I think I should be able to do this by having gCal sync with a new “personal” outlook calendar, but I’m concerned that when I sync, it will push my gCal appointments (on mobile device) into the Work Cal in Outlook. Advice? Thanks!

  13. What does the “Not Using Oggsync Mobile (see FAQ)” tick box do, precisely?

    Comment by Lorna Morgan — July 7, 2007 @ 6:29 am
  14. Just downloaded the software. Looks very cool. I will try using it for a longer time and see what happens.

The trial version seems to work only within +/- 3 days, which is not mentioned in the latest Press release. I found this out after digging deeper into the website. This is very confusing. If you have any limitations, please let your users/customers be clear about it. Don’t let people hate a great piece of software for some very minor non-technical reasons. :-)

  15. What does the “Not Using Oggsync Mobile (see FAQ)” tick box do, precisely?

    BUMP

    Comment by Greg — August 28, 2007 @ 2:06 pm
  16. The Not Using Oggsync Mobile check box will turn off OggSync’s attempts to disable calendar sync in Activesync. If you are using both Outlook and Windows Mobile with OggSync, you should disable the ActiveSync Calendar Sync.

  17. Can I use OggSync to sync the outlook calender between 2 users or maybe allow them to share a common calender ?

    Comment by Tan Lee Seng — September 4, 2007 @ 6:14 am
  18. Tan, yes you can, you share them in Google then use OggSync to pull them in.

  19. Very similar to Ben’s question.. — July 5,

I want to have my Outlook “Work” Exchange Calendar Sync on my mobile device.
I want to have my Goggle Calendar(s)on my mobile device as well (side-by-side with the “Work”
    Cal)
I don’t want my Google Calendar uploading to my Work Calendar in Outlook and I don’t want
to depend ot my Work PC’s Outlook to use the OggSync for Outlook. I see
this only as an optional client similar to my OggSync for Mobile.
So I think the question is “Does OggSync for Windows Mobile replace ActiveSync’s Calendar Sync
functionality ?” I’m stuck on trying to figure out how OggSync and ActiveSync coexist without
the need for “OggSync for Outlook”.

    Comment by Darko — September 21, 2007 @ 2:07 pm
  20. Hi Darko:

Yes, but you MUST disable the ActiveSync calendar sync, it cannot handle what you want to do:

    1) Install OggSync for Outlook, only sync to the “Work” calendar in Google.
    2) Install OggSync for Mobile, sync all calendars to mobile.

OggSync will keep them separate for you and no personal events will go to the work calendar.
