FAQ for WinMobile

Filed under: OggSync Overview — OggSync @ 12:16 am

Common questions and answers about OggSync:

Q) How do I change my sync options, they are grayed out?

A) You must first unsync to change the sync settings. To do this, uncheck your calendar, then sync again. At this point your sync will be undone (this is also useful if you didn’t like how OggSync synced your items as an Undo features). Then recheck, change the settings and sync again.

Q) I keep getting login failed when attempting to log in.

A) You can unlock your account with this google page (be sure to access from your cell phone):

https://www.google.com/accounts/UnlockCaptcha

1) try to log in (do not exit OggSync after failure)
2) if failed, unlock from the phone IE
3) (open oggsync again) try again

Q) What about the new timezone changes for daylight savings time?

A) Go to the microsoft mobile dst fix web site and install your DST fix.  Unsync OggSync before doing this by unchecking your calendars and syncing again.  Install the patch, then re-sync.

Q) I’ve installed OggSync using over the air (OTA), but it doesn’t appear in my programs list!

A) Some phones and devices will only download the CAB file, but will not kick off the install process. If OggSync doesn’t appear in your programs list, go to the File Manager in your phone, and select the CAB file that you downloaded to kick off the installation process, once the installation is complete, then you will see it in the programs list.

Q) How much does OggSync cost?

A) There are now two versions of OggSync, a Freeware version and a subscription. There are 2 prices to the subscription, $29.95/year and 3.95/month. The revenue is used to pay for continued development and author’s kids education. There is a free 3 day money back trial to the subscription. Sign up and try the full version.

Q) Does OggSync work WITHOUT ActiveSync (or anything else)?

A) Yes, just load OggSync on your phone and then it will connect directly to Google Calendar.

Q) Does OggSync work WITH ActiveSync?

A) Yes, OggSync runs on your phone, and it updates the Microsoft Outlook data that resides on your phone. ActiveSync will detect these changes and update the Outlook Calendar on your PC. If you are going to use OggSync for Outlook to sync Outlook directly with Google, you should disable the calendar sync part in ActiveSync.
Q) Should I back up before I sync?

A) It’s always a good idea to back up your Exchange and Google calendar before you use any automated synchronization software.
Q) I use exchange to sync my outlook and was just looking to add my personal google calendar to my device but you seem to have merged all of them. Is there any way to have them combined on my device but not in Exchange?

A) Yes, use OggSync for Outlook which provides a rich set of sync options for each calendar. You can choose how other Exchange users will see your Google synced events, if at all. You can also create a new Outlook calendar to sync your full calendar to.
Q) If I delete an event in Google (or Outlook) will the event be deleted in Outlook (or Google).

A) Yes, OggSync supports a full two way synchronization. If you edit an event, or you delete an event in one calendar, the changes will be propagated to the other calendar. OggSync is considering a “slave” or one way syncronization mode so that events may only be deleted from Outlook or Google, depending on your preferences. If you are interested in this feature, drop a note to support@oggsync.com.

Q) I’m using Google Hosted Domains, does OggSync support the calendars?

A) Yes! Just enter your email address for your google hosted domains account and use OggSync as normal.

Q) I’m having problems logging in, I can log into google just fine, but I get login failed from my phone.

A) The very first thing to check is your internet connection from your phone. Go to Internet Explorer on your phone an try to go to a web site (google.com is a good one to try).

If you are using WM6, make sure you have CF .NET 2.0 SP2 installed. Otherwise, you will not be able to log in as there is a bug in the original release.
If that works, you may try upgrading to the latest CF .NET 2.0 framework. If you can log into Internet Exporer and log into the web pages, verify your “connections ~ proxies” on your mobile device. These will sometimes say “from WAP to Internet, or from Internet to WAP”. Do a google search for “Proxy Connections Verizon” or whatever your phone service provider is and see if there are some hints on how to configure your phone.

Q) Does OggSync support a one way sync from Google?

A) Not directly, but it can be done. You will need to create a new gmail account for OggSync to use, then share your Google calendars with that Gmail account in READ ONLY mode. Then point OggSync at the read only gmail account.

Q) I’ve set up OggSync to sync a Google calendar, but events aren’t appearing on my phone (or in Outlook).

A) If you have recently changed accounts, verify that your calendars are still checked in the “select which calendars sync” page.

Q) My calendar syncs fine, except for this one event, what do I do?

A) Take a screen shot of your event setup and e-mail it to support@oggsync.com.

Q) I’ve decided not to use OggSync and I want to get rid of all the Google events from my Outlook calendar, and all my Outlook Events from my Google calendar.

A) Do not uninstall OggSync until you have done this procedure. First, go to “Menu~Set Which Calendars Sync” and UNCHECK all of the calendars. Select save. Then perform a sync, all of your synced events should disappear from the appropriate side.

Q) From Outlook, How do I create a new event for a particular Google Calendar?

A) OggSync uses the Outlook “Category” to track which Google Calendar it belongs to (with the exception of the “default” Google calendar). Enter the name of the Google Calendar (Exactly) in the Category field in Outlook.

Q) From my Phone, how do I create a new event for a particular Google Calendar?

A) If your phone or PDA software doesn’t allow you to edit the category of your event, you may try eXtreme Agenda to enter a new event and specify the Google Calendar name as a category.

Q) My times are off for one of my events, what do I do?

A) Do not attempt to manually fix them, instead report the problem along with a screen shot of the event details to support@oggysnc.com.

Q) When my phone is connected to my PC (over bluetooth or USB) and I select OggSync, it doesn’t work, but it works if it’s not connected.

A) You need to configure your connection proxy settings so you can access the Internet via your PC’s Internet connection. This may require setting your Work Network to Internet proxy settings. Try to access the Internet use the web browser on your phone to verify your Internet connection is working.

If you connect through a firewall proxy from your PC (In Internet Explorer on your PC, look at Tools~Internet Options~Connections~Lan Settings), you will need to configure your “Work” to “Internet” proxy settings to get the internet. To set this up, on your phone go to settings ~ connections ~ proxy, then add a new proxy that connects from “Work” to the “Internet” mirroring your Internet Explorer settings on your PC. This will tell the device to route your outgoing requests through your work proxy. Also make sure that ActiveSync identifies itself as the “Work” network.

Q) I can log in, and select my default calendar, but when I sync, I see 0 new and 0/0 updated. What is wrong?

It is likely that you do not have a calendar checked. Do the following, exit OggSync with Menu~Exit. Restart OggSync, go to the “Set Which Calendars Sync” page in the menu options. Do you have a checked calednar? If not, check a calendar you wish to sync and select “Save”. Exit OggSync again, reload it and verify that you have a calendar selected. If you do, excellent, you are now ready to Sync. Also, make sure you do NOT have “All” selected as your past sync range in the options page, that option will be removed in 2.09 (it shouldn’t be there).

Q) My question isn’t covered in this FAQ, what now?

A) e-mail the question to support@oggsync.com

Q) Does OggSync have a users guide?

A) The closest thing we have right now is this FAQ. If you don’t see your answer here, ask it and we will try to answer it and probably include it in this faq.

Q) Can I set up OggSync Pro so that my Outlook business appointments do *not* get synced with any google calendar?

A) To keep your non-category Outlook Events from appearing in Google calendars, do the following: create a new google calendar (which will remain blank, you can call it “outlook” for example), choose that calendar as your default calendar (”Set default calendar”) and make sure that calendar is NOT selected to be synced.

Q) Can I set up OggSync Pro so that appointments coming from specific (or all) google calendars show up in Outlook as ‘free’ (as opposed to ‘busy’)?

A) Not in the current version, it is in the requested features list.

Q) How do I upgrade from the Free version to the Pro?

A.) First buy the Pro version, from the OggSync homepage, click BUY and make your PayPal payment. Then on your mobile, go to the OggSync menu, click register and enter your email. OggSync will verify with PayPal your payment and the full version will be unlocked for you.

Q) The program just exits at the License page after I click “I Accept” (or somewhere else).

A) Try changing your regional settings to US standard date format (MM/DD/YYYY). Also if you have a date “hack” installed, uninstall this hack.

Q) I get duplicates when I get invites (as Google automatically adds them to my calendar), how do I keep from getting duplicates?

A) Go to the Google Settings and look for the setting to “Automatically add invitations to my calendar:” Turn this off. If that still doesn’t work, turn it on. Hit save, then turn it off and hit save again.

  1. does it support for chinese google calendar?

    Comment by sc — January 23, 2007 @ 7:58 pm
  2. We don’t know! :) OggSync does now support international characters (Unicode UTF-8), if that is enough to support Chinese Google calendar, then the answer is maybe. Try to go to this link: http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/default/private/full and log in, does that work for you?

  7. When making a new appointment on your mobile, OggSync will send the new appoints the default Google Calendar you specified during setup. If your Mobile phone allows your events to be categorized, then OggSync will sync that event to a matching Google Calendar(Pro version only), thanks.

  8. Brian,

From your PC do you connect through a firewall proxy connection to the internet? If so, you will need to configure your “Work” network proxy to the internet. To set this up, on your phone go to settings ~ connections ~ proxy, then add a new proxy that connects from “Work” to the “Internet” and in the proxy put in the proxy settings from the Internet Explorer on your PC. Thils will tell the device to route your outgoing requests through your work proxy.

    Hope that helps,

  9. Do use the automatic sync, do I need to keep OggSync running all the time, or will it launch itself to sync?

    Comment by Jwo — February 7, 2007 @ 11:09 am
  10. It does need to be running in the background, it does not use the CPU and you can navigate away from it, but that is how it knows to kick off at the AutoSync time. Give it a try.

    Comment by Ludo — March 1, 2007 @ 9:37 am
  14. I am eastern Time zone. When I sink my outlook calender with oggsync my event times are shifted 3 hours on my phone. If I swith my timezone on my phone to pacific from eastern then the event times view correctly but if I add an event then it shows up with a 3hour time shift on my google calender.

This used to happen on google calanders but has since been fixed but apparently outlook in mobile 5.0 has this same bug.

    How can I fix?

Is there a way with my Treo 700w to make sure that Oggsync always starts and runs in the background just like ActiveSync? Thanks!

  16. I posted yesterday how much I liked OggSync and I asked a question and the post is gone, so I will ask again.

Is there a way to make sure OggSync is always running on my Treo 700w. Activesync always seems to be running I want OggSync to do the same. It seems like it shuts itself down even though I leave it running. Thank!

  18. I have tried to follow the link to the .cab file download for smartphone (OTA download) from my blackjack. I get a 403 error when I try stating that “The specified URL refers to a resource for which you don’t have permission. Please contact the site administrator.”

Any suggestions? I hate using ActiveSync and it frequently stops working on my PC.

  19. Hi, since I upgraded to windows mobile 6 oggsync does not work anymore. Internet works fine but I get the error message: authorization required error 401 when I go to http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/default/private/full .

And when I try the regular sync I get the message : wrong password.

How can I solve this ?

    Rgds,

EDITOR:  You need to install .NET CF 2.0 SP2 for WM6 from the list on the left (only SP2 works).

  20. a) If I use PocketInformant on wm5 as a pda calendar program, will oggsync still work for me, or is the calendar data in some format or location other than used by pocket outlook?

    b) I use outlook 2003 on my notebook. Do I need to sync outlook to google calendar? It seems dicey to rely on outlook 2003 -> handheld -> google calendar for notebook entries to show up on google (and correspondingly google -> handheld -> outlook 2003). Is this an intended usage of oggsync?

  21. My company has started using Google Calendar at work, so a solution like OggSync seems to be becoming necessary for me. I’m trying it out now, and will presumably opt for the Pro version shortly. A few comments:

    * Please include a 16×16 and 32×32 version of the application icon, and don’t assume a white background. (The app currently has a 64×64 icon which is faded to white around the edges). I have OggSync in my (240×320 QVGA) Pocket PC’s Start Menu, which has the (default WM5 theme?) blue background. At 16×16 pixels, the icon is a horrible smudge, and surrounded by a pixelated white halo. Yick! If you want I can spin up a 16×16 and 32×32 version of the .ico for you.

    * The application executable is around 800k. That’s huge! I’ve written a first-person shooter for the PPC that was only 400k, and astronomy program for the PPC that was

My problem is my wife has a Blackberry and I need a program for it but non work as good as your product on my Motorola Q. Are you looking into expanding your user base into the Blackberry world?

  23. I’m running on WM6 on an O2 XDA Mini S (AKA HTC Wizard/i-Mate K-Jam), and can pick up that RSS feed OK from IE, I can surf the web fine, I have installed the latest .NET framework and am even happily using Google mail from the same phone, but my login is always rejected in Oggsync.

    Any ideas?

EDITOR:  You need the very latest .NET CF 2.0 SP2 (download available in the left bar).

  25. I am running OGGSYNC Freeware, with sync set up for past 2 weeks and
    future 1 year.

I changed the wording on a November 14 appointment and added a
December 15 appointment, both on my 8525.

I do a sync with OGGSYNC which appears to run ok - scanning back
2 weeks and foward 1 year. But, when I look at my Google calendar,
neither the November 14 change or the December 15 new appointment
    appear. What can cause this?

EDITOR:  If you set categories, OggSync Freeware will ignore events (thinking they are for another Calendar).  Blank your categories and OggSync freeware will sync them to your default calendar.

    Comment by Mel — April 21, 2007 @ 10:04 am
  26. Yes, for freeware, make sure your default calendar is set and it’s the one checked in the “Set which calendars sync” page, and that there is no category set.

  27. I don’t like the calander program supplied with my smartphone. I notice that you reference eXtreme agenda above. Do you support any other PIM applications. Thanks, this looks like a great product.

    Comment by Tom — May 1, 2007 @ 12:02 pm
  28. We support any PIM application that uses the calendar in your phone. It should be most of them.

  29. Will you be supporting the official release of WM6 anytime soon? I keep getting Logon failure, or Google timeout messages. It worked flawlessly for WM5.

    Comment by ryan — May 10, 2007 @ 2:26 pm
  30. You need to upgrade your .NET CF 2.0 to SP2 on WM6. (Download available here.) The one that shipped with WM6 has a bug which causes the error.

  32. Before I buy the Pro (as the free version has worked really well, I think) please could I check one thing:

I want to import my old (historical) events in google calendar that go back about 5 years (I imported the ICAL file to google as I could never get it to import to Outlook).

Can I ’synch’ (as a one off) all of this history with the Pro version, as I’m unable to do it with the free version.

    Thanks!

    Comment by Mark — June 1, 2007 @ 6:27 am
  33. You can create a new Google calendar, and import your ICAL file into that calendar.

Then, in outlook, you can create a new calendar, click in that calendar (and OggSync will switch it’s sync mode to that new calendar), then you can import just that one Google calendar. Is that what you are looking for?

  34. Loved Oggsync Pro on trial cingular blackjack. Upgraded to Cingular GTC 8125 and getting login failure even after upgrading .net cf 2.0 to SP2. Tried 2 different calendars I can log on to through the web. Web connection confirmed and switched from default proxy connection to no proxy. Uninstalled and reinstalled 2x with restarts in between. No evidence of significant failures in .net installer log.

    Windows Mobile 5.0 (5.1.195) (Build 14928.2.2.0)

Really hopin to make it work one way or another.

  35. I’m also getting the timeout errors on my Windows Mobile 6 Pro HTC Hermes. My attempt to upgrade .NET CF 2.0 to SP2 resulted in a message that said I already have it in the ROM, and thus can’t upgrade. Any way to get OggSync working? It really looks like the perfect solution for me!

  36. I was running OggSync on my Sprint 6800 without problem last week. I had to do a hard reset the other day and since then I’ve been unable to login to google (IE logs in fine.) When I try and apply the .NET SP2 patch I’m told I already have it in ROM. Any ideas?

    Comment by Chris — July 3, 2007 @ 2:02 pm
  37. I forgot to note, once OggSync fails to login and I quit the app, I have to do a soft reset to get OggSync to launch again.

Small gripe: When the login fails, could you not reset the username/password?

    Comment by Chris — July 3, 2007 @ 2:05 pm
  38. If you are having problems with no events syncing… make sure you dont have two calendars with the same name ! I had two (only one selected) and it wouldnt work until I renamed the second calendar to something unique.

  40. I have the same problem with my Hermes / 8125: Google timeout.
.NET CF is already installed. OggSync, after first opening, doesn’t even open up anymore if I don’t do a SR (Soft Reset).

  41. I have a problem with events showing up within my phone (moto q9c) calender. When I sync the phone with google calender, all the events from google calendar are in the phone calendar (i went and checked people’s bdays and they are there), but there is no icon on the phone calendar indicating there is an event on that day.

I thought maybe it was a phone settings thing, but then i started added test cases from the phone itself (using all day and hour long events) and the icons began showing up. is there some setting which I am overlooking?

    Thanks

  42. Quick update…I actually fixed my problem with events syncing but not showing up. Turns out the event within google calendar has to be set to “Busy” in order for it to sync and have an icon representing it on my phone.
